Large Thyroid Nodules: What To Look For
Thyroid health is important for the production of hormones that control various bodily activities, including digestion, heart functioning, and body temperature regulation. Thyroids that aren’t working properly—as in the case of large thyroid nodules—can lead to serious health risks. Knowing the signs of large nodules goes a long way toward receiving the medical attention you require. Large nodules result from unusual thyroid cell growth within the gland; however, they don’t always produce symptoms unless the patient’s nodules are large enough to see or the patient has multiple instances. In some cases, larger nodules can press against other neck structures, causing further issues. Contact us immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Trouble Swallowing or Breathing
- Hoarseness or Voice Change
- Pain in the Neck
- Enlargement of the Thyroid Gland – also known as a Goiter
Hyper & Hypothyroidism
Large thyroid nodules have the ability to significantly affect gland function, with the most common issues being hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism is the reduction of hormone production and can result in weight gain, fatigue, and depression. Hyperthyroidism is the overproduction of hormones and can cause irritability, weight loss, and heat sensitivity. Schedule an appointment with us if you suspect that you are suffering from either of these thyroid conditions.
